It was clear that just looking at the
parched Swad Caths green with the sun blazing down from a cloudless sky the
bowlers for this years merit final would be facing a stern challenge of
concentration. Eureka Park's Danny Petcher adapted well to the conditions
and cooly saw off the challenge from lower league bowler Ken Wallis from
the Cons Club with a 21- 8 win. There was a close game between Belvedere's
Rich Stretton and Dave Redfern with Richard looking poised for a win at
19-15, but Dave found a mark up and down the green which he used well all
afternoon and ran out a 21-19 winner. Dave looked to be on the way out in
the semi against Darren Smith as the Anglesey bowler took a 10-1 lead but
the game turned completely as the Alvaston man ran out a 21-18 winner.
Danny Petcher had a comfortable semi final win against Belvedere's Steve
Adams. Dave started well in the final but Danny foght back to be just two
shots behind at 12-10 but the Alvaston bowler took control again to win
21-15 and so get his hands on the trophy again which he has now won three
times in the last six years. These eight bowlers are joined by Belvedere's
junior county bowler Darryl Matkin and will travel to the County Merit
finals at Woodley.
